A trademark includes any distinctive words, letters, numerals, drawings, pictures, shapes, colors, logotypes, labels or any combinations of the above used in relation to or upon goods for the purpose of indicating a connection between the goods or services and a person having the right as proprietor to use the trademark.
In some countries, advertising slogans are also considered trademarks and may be registered as such at national trademark office. In other words, trademarks are signs/symbols primarily applied to goods to differentiate them from other goods. Although trade marks usually consists of words or logos, the protection for trade marks extends to cover devices, images, shapes, and in certain countries like the United Kingdom, the protection also covers music/sounds and smell signs.
